To Flu shot or Not??

I've had numerous patients call to office and ask my opinion on the Flu and the Flu vaccine, so here are some of my thoughts and recommendations..

The influenza virus is constantly mutating, but every once in awhile, the virus shifts its genetic structure so much that our immune systems are challenged. (This usually happens when a flu virus found in animals - like the swine flu or the avian flu still circulating in Asia - swaps genes with other viruses in a process called re-assortment, and jumps to human beings.) A flu pandemic occurs when a new flu virus emerges for which humans have little or no immunity and then spreads easily from person to person around the world. The avian flu is not easily spread. In the 20th century we had two mild flu pandemics, in 1968 and 1957, and the severe "Spanish flu" pandemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 40 to 50 million people worldwide (Reuters News Release April 27, 2009. ... By BRYAN WALSH) By Dr. Lynn Toohey, PhD.

After reading this information and knowing the flu shot is only a guess of this year's strands....I do not recommend getting a flu shot. I instead recommend boosting your immune system! Focus on the health of your body. The flu shot will actually lower your immune system briefly, and it is not genetically coded to protect against all strands of the flu. There is also the question of if heavy metals such as mercury and aluminum are in the flu vaccine or not.

Other things you can do is avoid contact with sick individuals as much as possible, staying 3 feet away. And of course washing your hands multiple times per day will prevent spreading illness. Also, be sure to get spinal adjustments to increase the flow of your nervous system to all your vital immune organs, keeping them functionally fully.

What Can You Do To Strengthen Your Immune System?

**Homeopathics
Vinco - Vinco's Homeopathic Flu Preparation (VHFP) is a remedy I use in the office for flu prevention and therapy. It is a homeopathic that is taken by an oral dose 1 time per week for 4 weeks prior to flu season. It builds up immunity to many strains of the cold and flu virus.

Boiron-Oscillococcinum is a product used to treat flu symptoms once it has set in, but it can also be used as a prophylactic. Instead of taking the recommended dose, take 2-3 pellets per day as prevention. One dose can be used for an entire family of four.

**Pro-Biotics
80% of your immune system is in your gut lining. Start on a pro-biotic/acidophilus as soon as possible. I highly recommend the two I carry in my office. SMI powder and ABC, which in my opinion are the best. Also Bio-K, found at whole foods and central market, is a great product. Some yogurts now have pro-biotics in them, be sure to stay away from yogurt with a high sugar content. Most any high strand pro-biotic, 50billion Cells of Acidophilus plus Bifidus per serving, should be adequate. Pro-biotics must be taken on an empty stomach.

**Vitamins A, C, D3, and Zinc are all major immune supporters. Start all four of those immediately.

**Quantum Nucleotides are huge immune boosters. I carry these in the office as well. Take 2, two times per day.

**Other Immune Builders - Olive leaf powder and extract, elderberry extract, astragalus, glycerol monolaurate, and lysine. Olive leaf extract and elderberry extract are strong immune support nutrients. Researchers report that a female, taking no HIV drugs, used an elderberry extract with olive leaf extract and experienced a viral load drop from 17,000 to 4,000, and also that a placebo-controlled double-blind study demonstrated that elderberry extract led to a rapid recovery from influenza and inhibited replication of nine other strains of the flu virus. A theory is that elderberry renders viruses nonfunctional by staining and coating them (Konlee, M. A new triple combination therapy. Posit Health News. 1998 Fall;(No 17):12-4.)

What if I feel like I'm getting the Flu?

-Like any other flu, if you have been exposed to any flu virus start administrating vitamin C 1,000 mg every hour for 6 hours.
Then 1,000 mg three times daily, add Vitamin A, D3, and Zinc to this regimen as well.

-Homeopathic Remedies such as Vincos have been found to be useful in conditions of flu (Jaber R. Respiratory and allergic diseases: from upper respiratory tract infections to asthma. Prim Care. 2002 Jun;29(2):231-61.) Gelsemium and Byronia, for instance "are the two most frequently indicated homeopathic flu medicines used to treat the fluEchinacea Purp homeopathic has been found to "modulate peritoneal inflammatory reaction and have a cytoprotective action on leukocytes" (Pedalino CM, Effect of Atropa belladonna and Echinacea angustifolia in homeopathic dilution on experimental peritonitis. Homeopathy. 2004 Oct;93(4):193-8.) It is particularly helpful in controlling fever and lymphatic inflammation.

-Quantum Immune Complex by Premier Research lab, which includes Olive leaf extract along with broad-spectrum, immune-stimulating phytochemicals: oleuropein, oleuropeoside and calcium elenolate will increase recovery time.

Any of the above products can be ordered through my office and found other places. Let us know if you feel you need help through this.

ACHOOOOOO!!!!!!

If you live in Austin and other allergen-laden locales, you are certainly familiar with the outward symptoms of airborne allergies. And if you've ever rushed to the bathroom after lunch, you may also be familiar with some food allergies and what they do to you. But did you know that depression can actually be a symptom of an allergy at work in your body? So can muscle aches, joint pain, anger and irritability, even an inability to think clearly. The list of allergy symptoms goes on and on.

The exact cause of allergies isn't known. Western science defines an allergic reaction as the body's defense mechanism against an allergen or foreign substance. The body's immune system takes over in an attempt to protect it. Ironically, your body is making you uncomfortable by fighting what are often benign substances.

Allergies to airborne substances, ragweed, mold, dust, mountain juniper, are often indicative of inflammation somewhere in the GI tract. They are typically secondary to a food allergy that is creating the inflammation.

Some allergens are actually inherited, but these are few. In fact, allergic reactions to soy, peanuts, dairy products, and wheat appear to be the only genetic allergies. Changing the pH and calming the inflammation of the bowels is the key to reducing or eliminating allergies. While it isn't an overnight process, the results are worth it-living without sinusitis, itchy watery eyes, headaches, pressure, fatigue, drainage, sinus infections, irritable bowels, spastic colon, diarrhea, and constipation.

You may be shocked to discover how many of your seemingly unrelated symptoms are actually allergies. Other symptoms of allergies include migraines, heartburn, fainting, blood-sugar problems, indigestion, and even mood disorders. Often, depression is actually a result of commonly ingested allergens, and many people find they can reduce or eliminate their need for psychotropic medications by modifying their food intake.

In my office we use homeopathic remedies, herbs, acupuncture and adjustments to alleviate allergy symptoms and the cause.

What Can I use now for relief???

Natural D-Hist and Texas Allergy

Both are fast acting and help reduce allergy symptoms. Both are sold only by Dr.'s and I do carry both in the office.

Natural D-Hist combines Quercetin, which is a mast cell stabalizers that inhibits compounds that affect the nasal passageways slowing down nasal discharge, with Bromelain which supports the mucousal lining and slows down the mucus viscosity. D-Hist does not leave you with that "hang over" feeling benedryl or other over the counter medications may.....

Texas Allergy Spray is a homeopathic remedy that slowly introduces Texas Allergens into your system such as Ragweed, Mold and Cedar. By introducing small amounts before allergy season hits, your body will build immunity to the allergen when it comes into contact with the real thing. I like to start my patients on this the month or so before the allergen that bothers them is at it's highest. For example I start my Cedar sensitive patients on Texas Allergy in late September for the November Cedar Season.

Pathological Versus Functional Ranges

There are two main types of ranges in the field of blood chemistry analysis: a pathological range and a functional range.

The pathological range is used to diagnose disease; the functional range is used to assess risk for disease before disease develops. The references that are provided with laboratory test results are referred to as the “the pathological range”, because if the test results are out of range, it usually indicates potential for pathology or disease.

The main difference between the functional and pathological range is the degree allowed within their normal ranges. For example the functional range for glucose may be 85-100 mg/dl, but the pathological range may be 65 -110 mg/dl. Levels above the pathological range may indicate diabetes. Levels above the functional range, but before they reach the extremes of the pathological range, may indicate insulin resistance and future risk for developing diabetes.

Conventional medical training is concerned with the diagnosis of disease and rarely preventative medicine; therefore, patients are usually not consulted regarding the parameters of the functional range. Healthcare providers that practice preventive medicine are those most inclined to incorporate consulting patients when their levels present outside of the functional range. If biomarkers can be managed before they fall within the pathological range, preventive medicine can be practiced.

Many traditional healthcare providers do not embrace the concept of a functional range. My belief is that care should be provided before disease is present. In my office I run a number of blood test panels and I look at the functional range. I work at bringing hormone, mineral and vitamin levels back into the functional range, so your body can function at an optimal level. I address what the western medical community calls a "low normal" or a "high normal" and see huge changes in a person's vitality with restored energy and enthusiasm for life when these levels return to functional.

For more information on getting your functional blood chemistry analysis report, call the office at 512-328-0505 to make an appointment.

Not all Yogurts are created equal !

Here's the scoop on Yogurt. I often recommend yogurt as a healthy snack to my patients because it has countless health benefits. But not all yogurts are healthy, and not all yogurts are created equal. I often recommend yogurt to patients suffering form Candida. Candida Albicans, also known as a thrush, yeast or fungal infection, can overgrow and become a problem that can cause irritating signs and symptoms that are related to many common illnesses. The probiotics, which is the healthy bacteria in the yogurt, will decrease the candida growth. But when a person chooses the wrong yogurt they can be doing more bad than good by feeding sugar to the Yeast.

Some yogurts are sugar bombs. Six ounces of yogurt should contain about 12 grams of natural sugar. Every 4 grams on top of that is equal to eating a teaspoon of added sugar. If your yogurt has 20 grams or more of sugar, consider it a dessert - not a snack. For example, let's look at Yoplait blackberry pomegranate yogurt, we may think it is good with all the healthy berries...but it has 27 grams of sugar and 170 calories! Another example, Stoneyfield Farm Fat Free Chocolate Yogurt has 180 calories, and 35 grams of sugar, defiantly considered a dessert!

This brings up the topic of calories, 170 calories is too high for a serving of yogurt. McDonald's Carmel Latte also has 170 calories! To guarantee the slimming effects and belly flattening abilities that yogurt has, keep your yogurts under 110 calories for plain, and 130 calories for flavored. **Avoid non fat yogurts containing saturated fats, artificial flavoring and food dyes. They may have lower calories, but if they are full of chemicals you are not getting any benefit.

So what should you look for in a yogurt?
~At least 8 grams of protein. Thicker yogurts like the plain Greek yogurt will have even more.
~12 grams or less of sugar
~130 calories or less

Benefits of Yogurt (when you choose a good one)

-Healthy bacteria in yogurt strengthens your immune system
-Belly-flattening properties from the probiotics (healthy bacteria)
-Promotes healthy digestion and regulates bowel movements
-Keeps blood sugar levels stable
-Great source of calcium - 30% your daily intake in 6 ounces.
-Most dairy sensitive people can tolerate yogurt, the enzymes and probiotics break down the lactose in it.
-Good source of Protein *the watery layer that sometimes settles on the top of yogurt is whey protein and contains amino acids that build muscle, so don't skim it off - stir it in and eat.

Yogurt Bonuses

*Add honey to your Yogurt, which is a prebiotic, a carb that helps the probiotics strive and grow.
*Yogurt can be used in place of sour cream in many dips - this will save some serious calories.
*Add Yogurt to a morning smoothie with fruit and water for a perfect thickness.
*Coat baked salmon in yogurt, the Vitamin D in fish helps you absorb the calcium in the yogurt better, and it's yummy!

A big thank you from Haiti

Most of you know I recently went on a Mission-Chiropractic trip to Haiti. It was truly life changing for me. The trip was lead by Dr. Peter Morgan who practices not only in NY but all over the world by traveling to third world countries. His focus has recently become Haiti. He has a Haitian patient who drives a cab in NY and sends money back to his family in Haiti. Two days after the earthquake Dr. Morgan took his patient, Surrell, and went to Haiti for relief work. What they arrived to find is that because Surrell, as poor as we would see his life to be was considered wealthy Haitian standards, found children being left at his home after they lost their parents in the Earthquake because the community knew they'd have the best chance to be fed there.

Four months later Surrell and his wife Sheila's home is now a make shift Chiropractic Orphanage thanks to Dr. Peter Morgan. During this mission we stayed in tents on the roof of this orphanage/house and was gifted the pleasure to spend time loving on the kids. Each day we went out into the tent cities and hospitals adjusting people and came home each night greeted with hundreds of little angel smiles. These babies taught me a lot about myself. Until last month, I didn't know that I could much love this much, and that this much love even existed.
___________

Only small individual self funded organizations like ours seem to be present there, we saw no red cross, no habitat for humanity - we only ran into many other missionaries and volunteer health care workers....

I put this video together as a big thank you for all of for your donations and help with the mission-chiropractic trip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kowO-P4Zey8
When we adjusted the people their eyes literally lite up and some even raised their hands in glory when they could feel the immediate relief on their bodies. It was so beautiful and I took home way more from Haiti than any of the material items we left.

I learned a bit of the History of Haiti that I feel strongly needs to be shared - the island consists of people who were brought over by the French as slaves from Africa. The salves quickly out numbered the French and revolted. The French jumped ship and went to New Orleans leaving the Haitian people with no education, no infrastructure, and in some areas poor soil that does not farm. The French later demand Haiti buy it's freedom from them affecting Haiti's economy for the next 100 years.....Then the earth quake of Jan 12th 2010 came to devastate a country that already had a hard time feeding it's people. That was the hardest to see, hungry dehydrated babies living in tents and filth.

It has only been a few months since the Earthquake and they are still in need of so much help. They can not be forgotten. I assure you the money donated to large organizations is not reaching the people in need. There was little to no Red Cross presence, only small volunteer groups there. Please help us continue to raise money and items for the orphanage at my website:
www.DrTeneshaWeine.com
or
www.Mission-Chiropractic.com

But, I don't feel giving just hand outs is enough nor is adopting babies and taking them away from all they know - I feel we have to educate and help them build a means for survival. With that said, I will be going back this fall on another mission trip to the same orphanage, continuing to help them to rebuild a school there.

A story you may have heard held very true for me in Haiti:
A little boy is walking on the beach - while there are hundreds & hundreds of starfish stranded on the sands and can not make it back to the water. The small boy reaches down to pick up a starfish and throws it back in the ocean. An older man happens upon this sight, and asks the child: "What are you doing? You can not possibly save them all!?!" To which the small boy replies, "I may not be able to save them all... but to this one... it makes a world of difference".
Looking at the country as a whole leaves a feeling of how can we ever help - but looking at the one orphanage we adopted through Chiropractic makes me feel hopeful we can give a better life to those 100 plus kiddos.

Well......two weeks ago I was at a Standard Process seminar in Wisconsin and I heard another Chiropractor mention in passing something called "Mission-Chiropractic" They are a group of Chiropractors started by a Doc who was turned down by Doctor's Without Borders because he was not an MD, I also tried to apply and was rejected. So, he formed his own and visits third world countries to bring medical help without using drugs or surgery.

Prozac, Zoloft or Vitamin D3 deficient?

Prozac, Zoloft or Vitamin D3 deficient?

Sick all the time? Headaches? Sad? Depressed? Low energy? Just don't feel well? Hurt all over? Low motivation? Lack of Focus?

Your body may be deficient in anti-depressants, highly unlikely, or you may be deficient in vitamin D3.

There is an epidemic of depression in the country. Can we all be depressed? Probably not. Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency can cause low mood and moderate depression like symptoms. Think about how depressed people in colder climates become in the winter months. Indoor tanning has become a huge industry in the Northern and Midwest states because it makes people "feel good."

We need Vitamin D, specifically in the D3 form for multiple normal functions of the body such as:

*Maintaining Energy Levels, Vitality, and Enthusiasm.
*Normal Thyroid Function
*Normal bone and cartilage mineralization
*To absorb and maintain Calcium levels
*Normal Blood Clotting
*Normal Heart Action
*Healthy skin integrity

Vitamin D3 can be considered both a vitamin and a hormone due to where it is produced and released. Therapeutic doses of Vitamin D can help prevent such conditions as:
*Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
*Peripheral Neuropathy
*Lupus (SLE)
*Fibromyalgia
*Depression
*Autoimmune Disorders

"The significant role of Vitamin D compounds as selective immunosuppressants is illustrated by their ability to either prevent or markedly suppress animal models of autoimmune disease". (FASEB J 2001 Dec:15(14):2579-85).

With the fear of skin cancer and wrinkles we are in the sun less and less these days. And when we are, we a lathered up with chemical based-toxin containing sun screen, blocking vitamin D absorption!

"Inadequate vitamin D status is an important public health problem, which could be readily addressed by adequate vitamin D intake or sunlight exposure" (Am J Clin Nutr 1997:66:929-36)

So, how do we achieve normal and/or therapeutic levels of Vitamin D3?

Let's start with nature. Spend 15 minutes in the sun 2-3 times per week without a sun block. As we said, low light climates can dampen Vitamin D levels. This emphasizes an important point:optimal functioning of the skin, liver, and kidney are necessary for metabolism efficiency.

Unable to swing that?Try adding it to your diet through foods high in vitamin D such as organic egg yolks, fish and liver. You will need to eat 3 to 4 servings of each per week to achieve the needed 400-600 IU per day. Most of us don't eat, nor want to eat the foods rich in D so supplementation of D3 can be used.

Lastly , take in in a capsule or liquid! Supplementation is absolutely needed when treating conditions present from depletion. But be careful where your vitamin D supplement is coming from. Unfortunately, like in anything else, you get what you pay for. Most over the counter products are in such low doses and poor content you won't absorb it well enough to feel a difference. The D3 we carry in the office is the highest quality and purest form on the market.

So, eat more fish - play in the sun - take your Vitamin D3 and feel good!

Love is in the Air, and so Are Hormones!~

The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: If there is any reaction, both are transformed

-C.G. Jung

With Valentine's Day around the corner, love is in the air this month......and so are Pheromones, Hormones, and Neurotransmitters. I have run this newsletter before, and as some of you know~ "I done went and fell in love" I found it appropriate to run again, so back by popular demand....

Ever wonder why you are attracted to a certain person and not another? What provokes gut feelings about certain people in your life? Why do you fall in love with one person and not another? Well the answer involves pheromones.

Pheromones (from the Greek words Pherein-meaning I carry, and hormon-to excite) are odorless molecules that are produced in the body and enter the world by wafting off the skin. They float up from the sweat glands and linger in strands of hair. Ever hug someone and hold a second longer to catch a whiff of his or her hair? What causes that subconscious action? Pheromones. Each unleashed pheromone is packed with information about your sexual desires, your level of aggression, and the attributes of your immune system It carries your one of a kind chemical signature or finger print!

Pheromones bypass the logical, thinking brain and affect the center of the primitive, emotional brain.

Can the simultaneously exhausting and exhilarating experience of being "love sick", or being impaled by the arrow of cupid be reduced to a simple chemical reaction in the brain? Well, yes. Pheromones are chemicals that one individual emits to elicit responses in another individual of the same species. The female fruit fly exudes an intoxicating pheromone to inform the male fruit fly she is ready to mate, so powerful these pheromones make the spindly-legged male weak at the knees. The female essence attracts him instantly to her to mate at that exact moment, it is unavoidable, he is compelled by nature.

Pheromones are powerful, but they aren't the only antidote to love. When we are struck by Cupid's arrow we produce a number of hormones and neurochemicals as well. The hormones are produced from our Endocrine Glands (pituitary, testes, ovaries, adrenals, thyroid, and pancreas) and released into our bloodstream. The neurochemicals originate in the brain and travel delicately down pathways and synapses through our entire body.

Here are a few examples of the how and why we are affected when we fall in love:

Phenylethylamine (PEA)
This is manufactured by the brain, it is the "feel-good" endorphin that makes our brain buzz. It increases blood pressure and heart rate, thus the love "high" we get in the beginning stages.
Side Note : PEA is also found in Cocoa. Does this answers the addiction to chocolate and why some women prefer chocolate over sex!?!

Oxytocin
This is the "cuddle chemical". This molecule is released in the Pituitary gland and inspires a reaction when we touch or are touched by someone we love. It is released in child birth, while nursing a child, from the touch of our significant other, and even from only a glance from the object of one's affection. Oxytocin is also released in large warp speed amounts during intercourse.

Vasopressin
This is sometimes referred to the "monogamy molecule". In conjunction with testosterone, vasopressin has a tempering effect and keeps males' sex drive in check so they do not go straight to the next attractive female and mate with her, then the next, then the next. Perhaps all men do not have this molecule in balance.....is infidelity simply a chemical imbalance? hmmm...

Testosterone
This is our "sex drive" hormone. This hormone is produced by men and woman. It is produced in the testes or ovaries, and in the adrenal glands. Testosterone tapers off in woman after menopause due to evolution, since we are no longer reproducing. That is why many woman are using supplementation and hormone replacement for testosterone.

Testosterone plays an important part in a man's libido and sperm production. It is shown in many studies that stress and mood can instantly reduce a man's testosterone levels. A man's libido, along with testosterone levels are shown to drop during major deadlines, after losing a job, during financial hardships, and even if his favorite sports team loses!

Dopamine
Dopamine is our "orgasm" neurotransmitter. It gives us the intense pleasure during an orgasm. Dopamine affects how we see and react to life. If we experience pleasure when embraced by a lover, or when we watch a beautiful sunset then Dopamine is at work. If we lose pleasure for the things we once loved, then something's wrong with our Dopamine levels. It is a very important chemical in sex, love, and having a connection with others.

In my practice I get to see small miracles daily. Bybalancing hormones and neurotransmitters I see patients feel good again in all aspects of life and love. The quality of their life improves greatly.

Disclaimer::By no means am I a cupid, but when hormones are in balance love certainly works better!
